Sunday 18th March- Gotta catch ’em all.

This week, Angelina Jolie made an addition to her family by adopting a 3 year old Vietnamese boy, called Pham Quang Sang (or as he is now called, Pax Thien Jolie) from an orphanage in Hoi Chi Min city. The details of the adoption have been recorded in detail in the press due to Jolie’s fame and as this is her third adoption/fourth child, various utterly childish comparisons to the formation of a Pokemon ball or football team have been made.
It is undeniable from a humanitarian standpoint that she is giving this child an amazing opportunity. Or is she?

While I do believe that adoption is an opportunity for a child to feel the love and warmth of a new family and thus, should be encouraged and celebrated, these pictures of Maddox Jolie looking absolutely terrified made me question the new trend of celebrity adoption. It’s obvious that Jolie is not doing this as part of any trend as she has an impressive record of humanitarian work and it is clear that she loves all of her children. However, is a celebrity adopting a foreign orphan necessarily the best thing for the child? The Jolie clan, David Banda and other celebrity adopted children will spend their lives being followed by paparazzi, hoping to capture a sweet family moment. The look on Maddox Jolie’s face in these pictures says it all. He may have a world of opportunities at his disposal but he shall have to learn to live his life in the spotlight as a price. The media frenzy that surrounded Pax Thien’s and David Banda’s adoptions must have also been overwhelming for the young children and added further stress to what should have been an intimate, family affair. The media attention that will surround these children is a disappointing consequence, but it’s probably more desirable than growing up in an orphanage.

This week, Jessica Simpson also declared her intention to adopt an orphan from another country. There is a sense of naivety in various young starlets who appear to be jumping on an adoption bandwagon. Although, even if it is just a trend, is that so bad? Surely, there are worse trends out there than giving an orphaned child, a new life and family?

The only problem, other than media attention that I can see is the preferential treatment of celebrities when it comes to the adoption procedure. Madonna’s adoption of David Banda is a prime example of the fast tracked process. Malawian law was bended to allow David to join the Ritchie family in London, despite the law stating that the adopting parents must have stayed in Malawi for at least a year. Later, it emerged that Madonna had paid more than $38 000 towards the education of a Malawian adoption official, prior to the adoption process. Malawian officials claim that the payment was simply a donation made to train government officials and had no bearing on the outcome of her adoption procedure; it undeniably led to some relaxation of the law for her. Meanwhile, a York mother who has been trying for two years to adopt a 15 year old Malawian girl has faced numerous difficulties. Perhaps, if she was able to make a $38 000 donation to a Malawian government official, she would get her child sooner? A fast tracked process should not just apply to those who can afford it. The adoption laws should be opened up and relaxed for all families, regardless of wealth or fame.

P.S. Suzie is in Hawaii right now, but unless she comes home with TWO orphans, I think Angelina has won.

  1. i totally agree with you den, its disgusting how celebrities get away with bending the law esp when it comes to issues such as adoption. and if the law has any sense they will stop jessica simpson from adopting a child, i fear she will drive the first ever baby to commit suicide, i would with her as a mother!

oh and if suzie adopted, that was be friggin awesome! purely for entertainment reasons hehe

  2. Jolie is an exceptional woman. She truly does care, and has her own ideas. I guess she could be thought of as a ‘trendsetter’, to the remaining celebrities. I am seriously worried about Jessica Simpson adopting, she definitely doesn’t understand what being a mother entails, but in all honesty, even though there may be the odd celebrity (Madonna) who will adopt in a manner which may seem unfair, in the end, each of these children will have a life which will be full of more oppurtunities than living in an orphanage in a 3rd World country, which is the most important thing.

At least Madonna and Jolie are somewhat smart. Jessica Simpson? The kid might actually be better off without her.

BRING BACK SUZIE! God I can’t wait to hear about what she got upto in Hawaii.

    Great update D!! XD
