Since it saddens me to think I stand accused of considering my lovely UK News too boring to contend with anymore, I have decided, as a ‘treat’ for any Patchers still visiting us (I say ‘treat’ because my ramblings can hardly be classed as a gift), to write about a UK News event which is currently in the press at the moment.

Yes, this is the shocking kidnap of 3-year-old Madeleine McCann, abducted during a holiday with family in Portugal’s Algarve 6 days ago.

It comes to something when you’re not even safe on holiday, doesn’t it? Every year, families scrimp and save to afford a getaway from Britain, and a year rarely goes by here without the abduction or murder of a young child, so no wonder. But we expect to be safe abroad. Because we don’t hear about anything like that going on over there, it’s all sun, sea, sand and satefy, right?

Not in this case. Last Thursday evening, Madeleine’s parents left her and her twin siblings in their hotel room to be looked after by a friend whilst they went to eat at a nearby restaurant. Just a few hours later they returned to find their daughter’s bed empty and the apartment window open. Doesn’t look good, does it? Especially since there are today reports that the Portuguese Police took their time cordoning off the hotel where Madeleine disappeared, meaning the culprit could escape and potential witnesses (holiday guests) were able to fly back hope to the UK without being questioned. This, coupled with the Portuguese Police’s refusal to issue an appeal for information (instead leaving the worried parents of the child to appeal themselves), their delay in releasing an E-Fit of the man in question and circulating photographs of Maddy whilst leaving hotel staff and the child’s parents to create and distribute posters asking for help themselves does not, unfortunately, bode well.

UK experts have now flown out to aid the local Police, and in the meantime, locals and family lead the search for Maddy over 9 Miles of Portugal. They all believe she is still alive, and we have to hope it is true, but with rumours that the child may have been watched before her abduction and taken by a British Paedophile ring it really makes you think about whether it’s safe for children these days. After all, if you can’t leave a child in a hotel apartment under supervision, where can you leave them?

If you happen upon this due to a Google search and are trying to find out how to help (if you have any information, etc – although I know that’s unlikely I’ll say it anyway) you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
